On Thursday, June 2, people across the country will wear orange to honor all those who have been killed by firearms — and to inspire action to stop the devastation of gun violence in America. Why orange? Hunters wear orange in the woods to protect themselves and others. In 2013, teens on the South Side of Chicago asked classmates to honor their murdered friend by wearing orange. That simple call to action has grown into a national movement — and orange is becoming the symbol of gun safety. Protect Minnesota is joining our partners at Every Town for Gun Safety, Moms Demand Action, the Brady Campaign, and scores of other national organizations in participating in Wear Orange Day on June 2, 2016.
To raise awareness for the cause, Protect Minnesota is sponsoring a fun event open to all at Lake Calhoun and the Uptown area in the early evening. Later, we’ll participate in an open event sponsored by Every Town and Moms Demand Action in downtown Minneapolis.
• 6 pm — Gather at the Lake Calhoun marina to pick up “wear orange” pins, stickers, and orange balloons, and then hit the sidewalks in small groups to hand them out to passersby.
• 8 pm — Move to the grassy lawn across from Wilde Roast Cafe, 65 SE Main Street, Minneapolis, where we’ll watch as the new I-35W bridge is lit up in orange light, before marching in unity across the Stone Arch Bridge.
