Solemn Liturgy for Good Friday
April 19, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm CDT
Good Friday marks the most difficult moment in the Christian calendar – the Crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ. As the Gospel of Mark describes it, Jesus was crucified at 9:00 am but didn’t die for another six hours; therefore, noon marks the middle of his agony and torture. As followers of Christ, we gather at noon to pray ancient prayers for the world, especially those who suffer pain and agony today, having in remembrance the blessed death of Jesus Christ. Since Good Friday brings to mind the death of Jesus Christ, this is one of two days (the other being Holy Saturday prior to the Vigil) where the Celebration of Holy Eucharist is not permitted. Any Holy Communion must be shared from sacrament blessed prior to or on Maundy Thursday.
We will gather in Saint Paul’s Chapel at noon for Good Friday Prayers and Communion from the Blessed Sacrament. Prayers will be prayed, a sermon offered, and communion will be shared before the congregation again leaves in silence, the elements having all been consumed and the sanctuary light extinguished. That night we will gather for music and meditations highlighting the Scandalous Beauty of the cross. The evening service will take the noon service from a slightly different angle. There will be no communion from the Blessed Sacrament on Friday evening.
