Maundy Thursday Agape Dinner + Holy Eucharist
April 18, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm CDT
The next major public worship service during Holy Week is Maundy Thursday. Maundy Thursday remembers the Last Supper where Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper (Holy Communion) and gave his new maundatum or “mandate” to “love one another” (John 13:34). It was during the Last Supper that Jesus also washed the disciples’ feet.
On Maundy Thursday, we will gather in the Bishop Kellogg Common Room, as the disciples gathered in the Upper Room, to share a meal in a “Dinner Church” format. You are invited to bring a vegetarian, Middle Eastern dish to share (dates, pita bread, hummus, olives, etc.) This is an invitation, not a requirement. All that is required for you to attend is you. This service will include the singing of hymns, lighting of candles, sharing of conversation, and hearing and reflecting on holy scripture as a community. The aforementioned parts of the liturgy will serve as our “Liturgy of the Word” after which we will journey to the Church, gather around the altar, make and share Eucharist before stripping the altar and leaving the church premises in silence.
Maundy Thursday is the first part of a three-part liturgy. This is why after the cross is veiled in black and the clergy prostrate themselves before it, worshipers will leave the church precinct without a formal dismissal in silence.
